BMW

3 Series

The 3 Series is BMW's compact luxury sports sedan, and one of the benchmarks of its class. It has long been the keen driver's pick, with sharp, balanced handling, strong engines and a beautifully made, tech filled cabin. The range is now simple. The 330i comes as a sedan or a Touring wagon and suits most buyers, while the six cylinder M340i xDrive is the fast all wheel drive flagship that sits just below the full M3. It is not the roomiest or the cheapest car in its class, but for the way it drives and the badge it wears it remains a class favourite.

★ Editor's Pick · 330i

This is the grade we would pick. The turbo four cylinder is quick and smooth, and in the latest update BMW made the M Sport package, adaptive suspension, 19-inch wheels, leather, a sunroof and the big curved screen all standard, so it is well loaded without touching the options list. The Touring wagon is about $3,000 more and adds useful boot space and load flexibility. Unless you specifically want the six cylinder pace of the M340i, the 330i is the smart buy.
