The i30 Sedan N is the fast version of Hyundai's small sedan. It gets a much stronger engine, firmer suspension and bigger brakes than the standard car, so it feels quick and alert on a good road, while keeping a proper boot and back seats you can actually use. You can choose a manual gearbox or an automatic, and the two make it feel like quite different cars. Hyundai covers it with a five year warranty that stretches to seven if you keep having it serviced with Hyundai.

★ Editor's Pick · The AutoFocus Verdict

The i30 Sedan N comes one way and fully equipped, so the only decision is the gearbox, and it shapes the car more than you would expect. The manual is the enthusiast's pick, with rev-matching that blips the throttle for you on downshifts. The automatic is quicker, far easier in traffic, and the only way to get remote start and remote climate control, which is worth knowing if the car sleeps outside. Both gearboxes get the same safety equipment, so you are choosing how you want to drive rather than what you are willing to give up. A glass sunroof is a $2,000 option on either.
