The LandCruiser 70 Series is an outback icon that has barely changed in look for decades, because it doesn't need to. It's a no nonsense, heavy duty workhorse 4WD built for the toughest conditions, from remote stations and mine sites to serious touring. It now runs a turbo diesel with an automatic option alongside the traditional manual, and comes in a wide range of body styles, including cab chassis utes, a wagon and the Troop Carrier. Three grades, WorkMate, GX and GXL, run from bare bones work spec to relative comfort.

The AutoFocus Verdict

The WorkMate is exactly what fleets and remote operators want: maximum 70 Series toughness for the least money, with nothing fancy to go wrong. You get the snorkel and the legendary driveline, but not carpet, alloys or much comfort, and the front and rear diff locks are an added option rather than standard. For a genuine work tool, that's the point. If you want the manual, note it's only offered on the Double Cab and Troop Carrier; the Wagon and Single Cab are automatic only.
