The IONIQ 5 N is the high performance version of Hyundai's popular electric SUV, developed by the same N division behind the i30 N. It pairs a dual motor all wheel drive system with a bigger battery and upgraded cooling, brakes and suspension so it can be driven hard and taken to a track. What sets it apart is how hard Hyundai has worked to make an electric car feel engaging: it can mimic gearshifts, plays a synthesised engine note and has launch and drift modes. It's a serious performance car first and an EV second, and a halo model priced well above the rest of the IONIQ 5 range.

★ Editor's Pick · The AutoFocus Verdict

The IONIQ 5 N is one of the most exciting electric cars on sale, turning the everyday IONIQ 5 into a track weapon whose simulated gearshifts and synthesised engine note make electric performance genuinely fun rather than merely rapid. It comes one way, fully loaded, so the only decision is whether you're in. It's a halo car priced accordingly, for enthusiasts rather than value seekers, but nothing else drives quite like it.
