The K4 Hatch is the five door version of Kia's small car, the bold replacement for the long running Cerato. It keeps the sedan's dramatic styling, roomy cabin and twin screen tech, but swaps the boot for a wide tailgate and folding rear seats that make loading bulky things easier. Most grades use an economical petrol, while the sporty GT-Line steps up to a punchier turbo. It comes in S, Sport, Sport+ and GT-Line, all backed by Kia's seven year warranty.

★ Editor's Pick · The AutoFocus Verdict
The S is the value pick, but plan on the $2,100 Safety Pack. In its base form it is the only K4 Hatch with a four star ANCAP rating, and it feels a little lacking inside. The Safety Pack fixes this, adding key safety features along with genuinely useful tech upgrades such as dual zone climate and an upgraded digital driver cluster, and it lifts the S to five stars, which makes the pack close to essential rather than a nice to have. This combination makes the K4 Hatch one of the best bargain hatches available.

The sporty flagship, with the turbo engine.
