The Picanto is Kia's city car, one of the last genuinely affordable new cars on sale. It's small on the outside but makes good use of the space inside, and it's easy to park. A recent update brought a new front end and a touchscreen. Its small petrol engine uses little fuel, and you can still choose a manual or an automatic gearbox. It comes in the value Sport and the better-equipped GT-Line, both with Kia's seven year warranty. Note that the Picanto's previous ANCAP rating has expired, so the current car is unrated.

★ Editor's Pick · The AutoFocus Verdict

The Sport covers the essentials that matter in a city car, including autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and a reversing camera, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. That kit, its low price and its small, easy-to-park size make it a strong first car for new drivers. The manual is the cheapest way into a Picanto and uses the least fuel; the automatic is $1,600 more and easier in traffic. Only step up to the GT-Line if you want its looks and nicer cabin, because the engine and the manual air-conditioning carry over unchanged.
