The CX-60 is Mazda's premium medium SUV, a five seat family SUV that moves the brand upmarket, with a longer bonnet, rear biased handling and a luxurious cabin. Its big draw is an unusually broad engine range: a value four cylinder petrol, smooth six cylinder petrol and diesel mild hybrids that are strong and surprisingly efficient, and a plug-in hybrid that can run on electricity for short trips. It tows up to 2.5 tonnes and climbs from the well equipped Pure to the luxury Azami.

The AutoFocus Verdict
Even the Pure feels a cut above a mainstream SUV inside, and the full safety suite is standard. The cheapest way in is the RWD 2.5 petrol, which is fine for town driving but the slowest and least special of the engines, so it's worth choosing carefully, because the CX-60 is really built around its smooth six cylinder petrol and diesel, with the diesel best suited to long distance drivers and the plug-in hybrid the quickest of the range. On equipment, the Evolve is only about $6,300 more and adds the gear you use every day, so most buyers should look at that before settling on the Pure.
