The CX-80 is Mazda's largest three row SUV, for families who need seven seats and a premium feel. It's the longer, seven seat version of the CX-60, sharing the same smooth six cylinder petrol and diesel mild hybrids plus a plug-in hybrid that can run short trips on electricity. It has all wheel drive, tows up to 2.5 tonnes and offers a genuinely upmarket cabin, from the value Pure to the luxury Azami.

The AutoFocus Verdict

The Pure proves you don't need to spend big for the good engine, since every CX-80 uses the same smooth six cylinder petrol through AWD, so the entry car drives just like the flagship. You also get three rows of seats, a 12.3-inch display, three zone climate and the full safety suite. What you trade away is presentation: there's no leather, sunroof, powered tailgate or heated seats, and the Pure is petrol only. If you want a premium feeling six cylinder seven seater and aren't fussed about plush trim, it's the value buy; if cabin ambience matters, the Touring is the step that unlocks it.

M Hybrid

Mazda's M Hybrid system pairs the engine with a 48-volt starter-generator and a small battery. It recovers energy as you slow down, then feeds it back to restart the engine and to assist it under acceleration, which trims fuel use a little and makes the stop-start system smoother around town. It's a mild hybrid: it cannot drive on electric power alone.
