The CX-90 is Mazda's flagship SUV, a large, premium three row seven seater. It's powered by smooth six cylinder mild hybrids, a strong petrol or an economical, torquey diesel, both all wheel drive, with the petrol rated to tow 2.5 tonnes and the diesel 2 tonnes. The cabin steps into European rival territory for quality and space, across three luxury grades: Touring, GT and Azami.

The Touring is the value way into Mazda's flagship, a genuine seven seater with leather, tri zone climate, a powered tailgate and the full safety suite, so it never feels base. What you give up versus the GT, about $11,000 more, is mainly the Bose audio, panoramic roof and bigger wheels, not anything essential. The two engines carry across the whole range: the smooth 3.3 litre petrol suits most buyers and tows 2,500kg, while the diesel is thriftier on a long haul but rated to tow 2,000kg.

M Hybrid
Mazda's M Hybrid system pairs the engine with a 48-volt starter-generator and a small battery. It recovers energy as you slow down, then feeds it back to restart the engine and to assist it under acceleration, which trims fuel use a little and makes the stop-start system smoother around town. It's a mild hybrid: it cannot drive on electric power alone.
