The CX-70 is a large premium SUV, essentially the two row, five seat alternative to the seven seat CX-90. It pairs a roomy, high quality cabin and a big boot with Mazda's smooth six cylinder engines, a strong petrol mild hybrid or a torquey, economical diesel, both all wheel drive and rated to tow 2.5 tonnes. There are two luxury grades, GT and Azami.

★ Editor's Pick · The AutoFocus Verdict

The GT is already a genuine luxury SUV and, with only two grades, the value way into the CX-70. Leather, a Bose system, a panoramic sunroof, a 360 camera and adaptive LED headlights are all standard, so it never feels like a base model. Stepping up to the Azami costs about $10,000 and is mainly about Nappa leather and ventilated seats rather than anything you'll miss day to day. Pick the smooth petrol unless you cover big distances or tow near the limit, where the diesel's torque and economy start to pay off.

M Hybrid

Mazda's M Hybrid system pairs the engine with a 48-volt starter-generator and a small battery. It recovers energy as you slow down, then feeds it back to restart the engine and to assist it under acceleration, which trims fuel use a little and makes the stop-start system smoother around town. It's a mild hybrid: it cannot drive on electric power alone.
