The MX-5 is the world's best selling roadster, a light, rear wheel drive two seater built around the joy of driving rather than outright speed. It comes as a classic soft top Roadster or the RF with a folding hard top, with a manual or an automatic. It is one of the most affordable ways into a genuine sports car, and suits drivers who value handling and feel over straight line pace.

The AutoFocus Verdict

The base is the purist's pick. The soft-top with the 6-speed manual is all the sports car many people need, and the lightest, purest MX-5 there is. It has the same eager 2.0-litre engine, RWD and limited-slip differential as the rest of the range, just with cloth trim and the basics rather than leather and Bose. It comes only as a soft-top with the manual, which in a car this focused is no bad thing. If you don't need the GT's comfort and kit, this is the one to buy.
