The ASX is Mitsubishi's small city SUV, now based on the Renault Captur, so it swaps the old ASX's age for a modern European body with Mitsubishi's own face on the front. It's an easy way into a compact SUV, with a turbo petrol and a big central touchscreen. It comes in three grades, LS, Aspire and Exceed, all front wheel drive, and is backed by Mitsubishi's warranty of up to 10 years.

The AutoFocus Verdict

The LS covers the basics well, with the big portrait screen, wireless CarPlay and the turbo engine all standard. Every grade shares that same engine, so the LS drives just like the dearer versions, and all you give up lower down is safety and comfort tech. Step up only for the features you want, not for a better drive.

Exceedfrom $50,815
