The Outlander is Mitsubishi's best selling family SUV, a roomy mid-size wagon. The cabin is neatly finished, with twin 12.3-inch screens, wireless phone mirroring and a long list of standard safety gear even on the base ES. A single 2.5-litre petrol engine runs the whole range, driving the front wheels, with all-wheel drive optional right from the base ES. There are two seat layouts: five seats on the ES, Exceed and Exceed Tourer, and seven on the ES, LS, Black Edition and Aspire, so only the ES lets you choose either. It is backed by Mitsubishi's warranty of up to 10 years, and the plug-in hybrid Outlander is listed separately.

The AutoFocus Verdict

The ES is honest value and well equipped for a base grade, with the twin screens, wireless mirroring, adaptive cruise, blind-spot monitoring and a 360-degree camera all standard. It starts as a five-seater; the third row is a $2,550 option and AWD adds $3,250. Step up to the LS mainly for the smart key and wireless charging.
