The Outback is an Australian icon, the rugged, jacked up wagon that goes where most SUVs can't while driving like a comfortable car. It pairs a roomy, well built cabin and a huge boot with standard all wheel drive, good ground clearance and Subaru's well regarded EyeSight safety. There are two petrol engines: a smooth standard one that suits most buyers, and a stronger turbo (the XT) with real overtaking and towing muscle. It comes with Subaru's five year warranty. An all-new generation is now on sale, so this one is selling as run-out stock, and if you prefer this generation it is worth moving before supply runs out. It is still a capable package, though the interior is starting to feel a little dated next to the new car.

The AutoFocus Verdict

The base Outback covers the safety essentials, with EyeSight and blind-spot monitoring standard, plus proper AWD and a cavernous boot. It's the pick for buyers who want capability and space without the turbo or luxury kit; the front and side camera views arrive at the Sport.
