The Trailseeker is Subaru's electric wagon, and the larger of its two EVs. It pairs standard dual motor all wheel drive with genuine off road ability, so it handles dirt roads, snow and wet weather better than most electric SUVs at this price. It's roomy, quiet and well built, with a big boot and long driving range, plus X-Mode and good ground clearance for going offroad, though unfortunately it is not rated to tow. It comes in the well equipped AWD and the plusher AWD Touring, backed by Subaru's five year warranty and an eight year battery warranty.

★ Editor's Pick · The AutoFocus Verdict

For most buyers the entry Trailseeker is the one to have, and it comes very well equipped. The dual-motor drivetrain makes a strong 280kW and 536Nm for a 4.5 second 0 to 100, the 74.7kWh battery is good for 533km on its range-friendly 18-inch wheels, and rapid charging at up to 150kW takes it from 10 to 80 percent in about half an hour. The cabin is well sorted too, with a 14-inch touchscreen running wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 360 camera, heated front and rear seats and the full Subaru Safety Sense suite, plus a big 609-litre boot and genuine offroad ability from 211mm of clearance and dual-mode X-Mode. Step up to the Touring only if you want a plusher cabin, because the drivetrain and offroad ability are identical.
