The WRX is a rally bred legend, Subaru's turbocharged all wheel drive performance icon, loved for decades for its grippy, all weather pace. It pairs a turbo boxer with standard all wheel drive and a choice of a proper manual or a quick automatic, in both a sharp sedan and a practical Sportswagon. It's a usable performance car, fast and engaging on a back road, secure in the wet, and roomy enough for the family. It spans AWD, RS, the adaptive-damper tS and the manual tS Spec B, plus the Sportswagon GT and tS, backed by Subaru's five year warranty.

The AutoFocus Verdict

The base WRX is the way into the range, and you choose your gearbox: the slick six-speed manual for the purist at $48,890, or the 8-speed Sport Lineartronic auto for about $2,500 more. Either way you get the 2.4-litre turbo boxer with 202kW and 350Nm, symmetrical AWD and the grippy all-weather pace the WRX is loved for, plus sports bucket seats, an 11.6-inch touchscreen running wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, 18-inch alloys and the full EyeSight and Vision Assist safety suite. Step up to the RS if you want a plusher cabin, because the drivetrain is identical.
