Buy the Mazda 3 if

you want the more premium cabin and the better drive. The 3 feels a class above its price inside, handles more sweetly, and has the bigger boot and wireless Android Auto. Two things to note: buy the Touring grade or higher for the full safety suite, and its ANCAP rating has expired, so it is no longer star-rated.

The verdict

The Corolla's trump card is running costs. Every version is a hybrid, so it uses around 4.0L/100km, and with Toyota's resale and reliability behind it, it is the cheaper car to own over time. The Mazda 3 is the nicer car to spend time in. Its cabin feels more expensive than the price suggests, it is more satisfying to drive, and it has a bigger boot and wireless Android Auto where the Corolla makes you plug in. Both are sold as a sedan too if you would rather not have a hatch.

There are two things to watch on the Mazda. The full driver-assist safety package is only standard from the mid Touring grade up, so the cheapest versions go without some of it, and its ANCAP rating has now expired, where the Corolla's still stands. If the fuel bill and a current safety rating lead, the Corolla is the sensible pick. If you care more about how the car feels and drives, the Mazda 3 rewards the extra attention.
